By Jean E. Grundy. Part 1 of this book gives an outline of the legal status and requirements of a seventeenth-century midwife and this is followed by a description of her role within the family once she was sent for to attend the birth of a child. Part 2 of this book is based on the Midwives Nominations o fYorkshire from 1662-1732, during which time midwives applied to the diocesan authorities for a licence to practice. The women of the parish who had been safely delivered by the particular midwife often signed these nominations or requests for licences.
